Description

Botanical illustration digitally manipulated with a pixel-sorting algorithm. Fine Art print on Hahnemüle German Etching 310 gr paper Edition 2/3, plus artist proof Part of the series After Nature My relationship with nature is rather contemplative; an admiration from afar informed by the bucolic landscapes of naturalist paintings and the almost otherworldly photos from travel magazines. And through this pandemic, as I longed for landscapes, both unknown and familiar, I kept thinking about our mediated relation with nature. After Nature looks into artificial and unstable images, informed by an aestheticized idea of nature, both as something outside of ourselves (the wilderness), and something that we can dominate, classify and possess. Creating a link between the space we observe and the one we find ourselves in, it tackles the current condition of images and ecology; not the phenomenal image but the artifact. Directing our gaze at the intersection of digital media and eco-literacy, the work explores how these technologies mediate the creation and circulation of images that inform how we see and know nature. These technologies are not neutral means of reproduction and transmission but are actively transforming whatever they mediate. Using a pixel sorting algorithm, I manipulate botanical illustrations that circulate on the web. The application written in Processing scans each pixel in the image and then rearranges them based on their brightness value. In essence, the program generates a series of instructions to which each image transforms differently based on its own pixels. Like trails of light and erasure, creation and destruction, the displacement of pixels transforms the image. By catching an instant from this process of becoming, we discover both the original plants and their representations as yet another composite; a system where its elements are continuously regenerating, an ever-changing landscape of shape and form.
